my VPS hosting provider, future Hosting, has offered me a connection to a backup server over PPTP for softlayer.
the address is: pptpvpn.dal101.softlayer.com
but for some reason I am not able to establish a connection thru my Linksys WRT54G router.. Could someone help me with this?
I have tried asking for help on the Linksys WRT54G sites, and they have no idea,
and Future Hosting has no idea either, and since I am not able to connect to Comcast HSI without my linksys router for some reason, I can't tell if its a router issue or what, does anyone help me figure this out?
I read on one site, to try opening ports 1723 for TCP, and 47 for UCP, but I tried that, and that didn't work....Does anyone know offhand which ports I'm supposed to open? I'd ask softlayer, but its thru my VPS provider.. I just wondered if anyone knew offhand?
Our suggestion was to disconnect the router and use your PC to attempt to connect directly to PPTP to isolate the issue as we had another customer who had an issue with the PPTP connection and their router. You said you can't connect your PC directly to your cable/dsl modem.
You did, however, just send us an error message which we have passed on to SoftLayer for them to review.

yeah I have no idea why I can't connect my PC directly to the modem, must be a Comcast HSI issue.. or just my confusion as to if I'm supposed to use a Crossover cable, or Cat5e cable, to connect my modem to the NIC card on the back of the PC.
I first tried Cat5e, that didn't work, so I tried the crossover instead, that didn't work either, but yet, when I connect the Linksys WRT54G router to my modem, then the router to my PC, I get internet fine, just can't connect to the VPN at all..
I also tried setting the computer in DMZ mode, that didn't work either,
so I'm all out of ideas on this one.. If I call Comcast and ask them what the deal is, they'll send someone out here in a week or so, which won't help me any at this point as they know nothing about routers or switches or anything like that so they aren't any help either.
I just thought another Future Hosting customer might be able to help me out on this one who also has the VPN option..
