I was just wondering is there a point on putting my scripts under a license when they will only be shared with a few people with access to the site (cPanel) If there is a license I can put it under could you please provide a link.
For my copyright notice, Say if I want to say "copyright (c) 2006 mysite Technologies" would I need to register that name some where?
Copyright has always been a bit of a complex issue. In most western countries any work you produce is automatically copyrighted (this includes the UK). You do not as such need to have a message to this effect.
However having a message can have two bonuses - in some countries it is a requirement that you display a copyright notification for copyright to be active - it can also make people think twice before stealing your work. If you are going to place a copyright notice at the bottom of your page all that is required is a simple notice like: Copyright ©2006, Your Name Here. All rights reserved.
All you are doing is saying the work within that page is copyrighted by yourself. However is this is automatic in the UK anyway, it isn't really needed. Follow so far?
I think the other bit you were tring to ask was can I protect my company name by registering it. The answer is yes and no - all depending on your budget! You can apply for your name to become a Trademark - to do this you write to the UK Patent Office and pay a fee of £200 - valid for 10 years. If someone then tries to use your trademarked name for similar services - you can take them to court and quite easily prove you own the trademark with the registration documents you will get from the Patent Office, and possibly also receive compensation.
Then there is the free option. As part of the copyright laws, all trademarks are automatically granted some protection. If some then uses your trademark you can start a court case against them. HOWEVER, if you have not registered your trademark you will then have to prove it is legally yours. You will have to prove that: you have established a reputation in the trademark, the use you are complaining about would be likely to confuse or deceive the publis and the use would be likely to damage your business and goodwill.
The above can obviously be quite hard to prove - which is why a lot of companies go for the simple of option of paying £200 - makes court cases a lot easier.
