Opteron 165 or X23800
My old pc (XP3200) recently fried and its time for a well deserved upgrade. Sticking to the Socket 939 series I am interested in two processors really but unsure which to go for:
AMD OPTERON 1.8GHz 165 1Way S939 2MB 64Bit Dual Core
AMD Athlon 64 (ADA3800BVBOX) X2 3800+ Socket 939 Dual Core 2.0ghz 512Kb and 512Kb Cache
Its gonna be used for the normal work (emails etc) plus the odd few games such as CS Source etc. Anyone want to share any advise which would be better suited?
I would go with Opteron, I've heard of people overclocking it to 3Ghz with it running perfectly stable, you can OC to 2.7Ghz on air cooling easily.
I would change the Opteron to a 170.
Both the 170 and the x2 3800 are very good choices and are very overclockable.
You'll probably see about the same speeds from the two.
I would choose the x2 3800 because of the value for money.
Do a quick google search on both and you'll find plently of reviews.
You don't think you could overclock the Opteron to a higher speed then the 3800?
I have worked with OPTERON and it works great for me. I dont have experience with Athlon 3800+ though.
