I currently run a very successful site/forum which has been ongoing since early 2002. I was originally using shared hosting and then decided on a dedicated around 3 years ago.
For the past few years the forum (vBulletin) has been running absolutely fine but I now have over 22,000 registered members and the forum has crashed twice in the last week. I simply restarted MySQL and the forum was back up again and running fine. Please note the server is image heavy in that users are able to download images for free (which means the server eats around 800-900gigs bandwidth per month easily) to give you a rough idea of what the server is for.
I know that I need to upgrade the server but was wondering whether I should simply upgrade my ram (ie 2048ram) or upgrade the server (ie Dual Core) itself. Here is what I currently have:
Pentium IV 3.0ghz (HT)
Here are my WHM readings at the moment:
Server Load - 0.90 (2 cpus)
Memory Used - 45.7%
Swap Used - 12.96%
I have just jumped over to my webhost who offers 512ram increments @ $25 per month or 512ram @ $135.
I was hoping to get 1024ram but this will cost $50 per month or $270 one off fee. Is this about right or is it too expensive? Would 512ram help me out at all?
At the moment, I pay $170 for my dedicated server and if I were to put in another $60 per month I would be getting a 2.8 DualCore with 2x250gig hardrives, 2048ram and 2000gigs bandwidth (fully managed).
$270 isn't on the high side because you have to bear in mind that also covers the cost should they have to repair / replace down the road. If you feel that's high, there are definately deals on dedicateds, but sometimes staying with a provider whose been good is the smartest move.
