I was sitting in ICS class today bored out of my skull while people gave their PPT presentations. So I looked to my right, and saw a Internet Time Line chart. It had all kinds of good info on it, then at the bottom there was a timeline with how many hosts there are online. At the last count in 1997, there were 16,500,000 Hosts. But that was like 9 years ago, I can't imagine how many there must be now. Anyone have any factual information on how many there are now?
A host used to be a single machine on the net. However, the definitions of a host has changed in recent years due to virtual hosting, where a single machine acts like multiple systems (and has multiple domain names and IP addresses). Ideally, a virtual host will act and look exactly like a regular host, so we count them equally.
