    Unhappy Processes on VPS

    I have a VPS running Virtuozzo with centos-4. My host limits the number of running processes I can have to 127.

    Recently, I keep hitting that limit and most the processes seems to be produced from the same few commands. Can anyone tell me what's causing them?

    /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL (41 processes)
    /usr/var/include (26 processes)
    [sh <defunct>] (26 processes)

    Thanks for your help

    Hello Duckax,

    You can reduce the number of concurrent processes spawned by apache by reducing the MaxClient value in httpd.conf. Don't forget to restart apache (service httpd restart) to apply the changes.

    What user is that running off of? I have a feeling you have some malicious activity on your server causing that. I suggest investigating the server for possible exploits, and if that is the cause securing the server so it does not happen again.

    @Steven
    That process was running off nobody. What kind of exploit causes things like this?

    Ok you definately have an exploit going on then, likely a php script got exploited an some malicious code got injected.
