Question Convert .htaccess/.htpasswd file to IIS equivalent?

    Hello,

We are trying to move a customer from a cpanel account to an h-sphere account.. and they have a bit .htaccess file that contains a list of usernames/passwords for protecting a folder access.

Is there a conversion tool or something to change the passwords to the ISS equivalent?

    Thanks!

I think hsphere provides a directory protection mechanis in their file manager for IIS.

In case you cannot find the option , you can use a third party tool calle IISPassword from troxo to recreate the .htaccess files and protect the directories

Yes, I realize that hsphere has a protection system... but what I am trying to do is convert an existing .htpasswd file (from apache) to the hsphere/IIS format.

    Is this possible?

ie: The customer does not want to recreate the passwords, since they don't know them all, etc... (There are about 100 users/passwords, and our customer does not want to contact all of them to ask them to give new passwords...)

IIS5 and IIS6 use different algorithms to create the .htpasswd files. You can copy .htpasswd files easily enough between different Windows 2000 machines (provided they're both using IIS5). Same goes for Windows 2003 machines using IIS6.

That being said, Apache can use both algorithms to encrypt their .htpasswd files so depending on how it was created, you may (or may not) be abe to use an existing .htpasswd file on a Windows box running IIS. What may be an easy way to find out would be to create a .htpasswd file on your IIS6 host and compare the passwords from each file. If they're similar enough, you may just have a winner.
