Here are some places that people have been suggesting in this board to buy some affordable rackmount servers:

- www.acmemicro.com

Personally I like acmemicro since they sell supermicro bare bones server at a very affordable price.

I have been building 10+ rackmount servers myself (no, I don't sell servers). If you need any of my advice, let me know.

If I am going to buy the above configuration... will I need to buy any extra hardware?

I have heard of P4 isn't good for server as compare to P3... is it true?

What are the extra cost for the above if I am going to buy the above configuration besides the shipping fees... any idea?

I can highly recommend Acme Micro as a supplier.

You will also need:

CPU, RAM, Hard Disk as the item you posted is only the case and the motherboard.

I just built a server based on that Supermicro case and the P4SBE motherboard. I am extremely pleased with AcmeMicro's service, price, and delivery. The server is excellent (so far). Keep in mind - this is case, power supply, and motherboard ONLY. You will need RAM (and make sure you get low-profile ram as that's all that will fit in a 1U case - try Crucial but be aware that only the 128MB and 512MB modules are currently low-profile for this board), a CPU, and disk drives (it will take two, but you can use 1 if you prefer). I built my server with 2 drives and software RAID 1 and it works very well. The P4 runs very cool and is a good choice for a server, IMHO.

This board does support hardware monitoring with MRTG and lm_sensors and this is an advantage over many other solutions.

My apology, I did not subscribe to this thread so I did not realize there are still some discussions going on Fortunately, there are many other WHT members that are always willing to help somebody else, so I suppose you already get the answers you need

The extra costs, would be the cost to add CPU, memory, and HD ... probably around $300 depending on your needs. It's really a good deal considering you are getting a supermicro server, one of the best server out there

Yeah go with supermicro. If I could go back in time I could have bought 9 pretty beefy supermicro servers instead of what I have now =/ I even read somewhere that deal orders some of their cases and motherboards from them (Custom Made For Dell)

Companys like Dell don't produce any parts. They just spend money on R&D to see what are the best suppliers for their systems.

I will post an update on what I am going to get from www.acmemicro.com but to my understanding they will only accept advanced wire transfer or Cashier's Check for international orders? This is what I get from their sales reply.

Yeah, they don't take CC orders from International customers, ca't say I blame them really. We pay via wire transfer and it's all quick and hassle free still.

Do you save much going with these whitebox vendors? We've price dual P3-1.4 and dual Xeon 2.4 boxes and Dell is about 10% more.

Dell has on site service while some of these guys told me to send the box back if it's down! (Not good for a webserver!) If I pieced together a box, I'd end up sending drives back to Maxtor, etc for service. Sending CPU back to Intel for service.. You get the idea..

We brought a few P4 servers from interpromicro.com as well. Good pricing, delivered on time and been running for two months now. No problem so far. I would recommand you to get Supermicro motherboard. Stay away from AMD servers. In long run, overheating could be a problem. Since you wont be able to visit the data centre yourself. Hardware replacement can be expensive if colo tech charge $150/hour for the tech support.

As for the payment, I believe no matter which company you order. If it is an international order, you will have to make wire transfer. We wired the payment and fax them the payment receipt. They built the server the next day and test it for 48 hours. Servers were shipped out the day after they received the payment.
