New ISP opening, I need your suggestions (mainly about bandwidth)...

Ok, this won't be easy to explain, but I'll try anyway.

As all the pros know, the world (and the Internet's worl especially) goes to a "specialization" system, such as making a niche in the niche to better satisfy the customer needs and to focus on certain specs.

I'm planning to open an ISP based on this concept: to give 90% of the service based on a specific thing and (obviously) declaring it and stating it very clearly in the TOS.

Let me 1st focus on the idea than I'll go trough the suggestion/questions.

As we all know, each business has it's onw target. Speaking about servers/hosting/colo we can make a wide range of customers, but what I plan to is to focus asolutely ONLY on a specific niche. Let me make it clear:

    - there are the so called "lowest budget customers" such as the guy who want to put up his own personal fortpage-generated single page site speaking about who he is
    - there are middle lowest budget hosting plans for those who like to put up the "my family site" showing all the pictures from they'r last trip.
    - again, very low budget hosting for the grocery around the corner, who likes to tell Mrs. Smith to visit his site to get updates about how many apples he has today, so that Mrs. Smith can walk downstairs for 50 yards, and get a bag of sweet apples.
    - much more there are little companies who like to have they'r own flash based 5 pages "corporate website".

and so on, growing little by little. Considering these customers it would be enough to run a single server to host probably 10,000 customers all at once.

Now please remove this kind of customers from your mind and focus on more serious clients. When we come to what really matters, in therms of hosting, we come up to the same conclusion: bandwidth.

The bandwidth is the one and only answer to the big business model. Just to give an example, think about what specs a free file hosting service needs (such as megaupload.com), or maybe how much bandwidth a free adult hosting needs (such as kinghost.com, average 27 millions webpages server every day).

Unless we talk about a so called "gaming server" (which requires very high specs hardware and a damn good bandwidth routing to give the lowest ping and the lowest lag as possible) most of the high volume business requires a huge ammount of bandwidth at the top of all needs.

What I'm planning to do is an ISP widh shared connections (it's absurd to think about dedicated uplinks) able to give the bandwidth most of all. What I plan is a ded servers provider which declares that the customers service isn't great, (apart form reboots), that the servers are totally unmanaged (just os reinstalls in ISP's dues), that the hardware is not top class (able to stand the load but no superfast boxes).

To make it clear: what I plan is an ISP based on a simple concept: get your cheap $50 ded server, upload your favourite top 100 DVD9s and let the whole world download them, without pain for bandwidth.

We could shrink the whole concept into a couple questions:

Can someone suggest the cheapest way to get a 1,000 Gbps routing on the cheapest low budget carrier?

How much would this cost (excluding hardware costs)?

WHere to plan such a project, meaning which DCs to choose?

Thanks for all your replies, they will be greately appreciated.
    Sevy,
planning to build something like "absurdhosting.com" or whatever.

1,000 Gbps doesnt exist Largest available port is 10 gbps.
The cheapest low budget carrier is Cogent, especially for 10 gbps ports
There are not that many companies that actually fill a 10 gbps port.

How much would this cost (excluding hardware costs)?
You would have to commit to the full 10 gbps port. A single 10 gbps port with Cogent -- price will be under $100,000 per month, depending on credit, location, content ratios, etc.

WHere to plan such a project, meaning which DCs to choose?
It would have to be a major metro area, as 10 gbps ports are not available everywhere. You would need to look around for low cost data centers, that have Cogent available

Before you start a project of this size -- you will need considerable financial support. The carriers and vendors wont deal with you otherwise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't that called piracy?

honestly you probably won't need a 10gbps port. Start off with something like a full ds3 and expand as you need it. I can tell you the isp I work for has a single ds3 for almost 2k customers and the speeds they get are great.

Oh my. All I can say is you need help if you think this qualifies as a "business model."

Problem 1: Your legal exposure is HUGE for this kind of model. You can't just allow people to offer pirated files, warez, videos, porn, etc. without a thought to the repercussions of inviting, one, this kind of customer and, two, their kind of "customers."

Problem 2: You have little, if any, hope of making such a model fly in the US. Most, I think (someone out there feel free to correct me) have tried and failed to make the lawless offshore model work to any significant degree. It may be theoretically possible, but usually it only happens in fits and spurts as "lawless" hosts bounce around global providers, cheating one after the other and sucking down enormous bandwidth in the process. Most web hosts here can probably recite their own horror stories.

We could shrink the whole concept into a couple questions:
Aside from the obvious moral quagmire you're willfully involving yourself in I would again, forget about trying this, period, but if you are game, you'd have to try outside the country somewhere that's favorable to illegal behavior. The chances of building a sustainable business using this model in a country that WOULD encourage this kind of behavior is at best a major long shot. You're also inviting major DDoS extortion and that kind of thing, even if you did succeed in getting huge bandwidth into some offshore haven.

There is nothing wrong, in my opinion, with going for a "cheap hosting" model but you still have to have a sustainable business and a reasonable AUP and conditions and terms that will keep the scum of the earth from overridding your desire to make money. If you want to do it in the US (or most any industrialized nation) and not eventually get shutdown you'll have to keep your customers mostly legit.

I think he was using the dvd9 rips as an anology. I don't really think he was going to market his services as a cheap way for people to pirate software / videos / or anything else. He probably said dvd9 rips because they are large files and that would help illistrate his point that the customer wouldn't have to worry about bandwidth.
