unmanaged means you do all the work yourself -- you secure it, keep things updated, and basically have no outside help.
Managed means if you have a control panel installed, that's all you should ever have to worry about and the company takes care of everything.
next time try using the Search tool, this has been discussed 100's of times

I'm also ne to this but i think
Managed: Hosting provider will take care of updating and installing the essential components like php, gd library, zend optimizer....etc. Just open a support ticket and they will keep your essential components up to date. (but this does not include updating custom software installed by you!)
Unmanaged: You've to take take of all this

Be careful when hosts say "managed". Definition of managed varies from host to host. I once talked to a host claiming to be "fully managed", but after the chat I found out that the "managed" part was monitoring the network and if the network goes down, they'd fix it, but everything server related was up to you.

Hi!
To be honest...it varies so greatly between host to host...you need to flat out ask:
1) What are you expected to do
2) What am I expected to do
I always go for the unmanaged..myself.

In a dedicated server, I understand the difference between managed and unmanaged.
But in a VPS, I am sharing the server with other users. Therefore, like shared hosting, I thought managed VPS is part of the parcel.
The host manage the OS security, server stability and uptime. Ofcourse the user manage their own software installations, like how a shared user manage their own scripts?
So what is the difference between managed and unmanaged vps?

If you think of a VPS as a small dedicated server then you are responsible for 99% of the same thing apart from things you can't upgrade, such as the VPS kernel. Apart from that as said elsewhere in this thread it does alter user to user so you should ask the host what they mean by managed
