    Question Conversion to RAID 5

I have an already running server with several clients installed. I have two 73GB SCSI drives, 15,000 ones (fast!). One has the "/home" directory, the other I'm using to backup the first. No RAID.

I'd like to buy another 3 of these drives and switch to a RAID 5 configuration. Is it possible to do this without losing the data on my first drive and disrupting my clients' sites? I'll probably also need to get a RAID controller as I don't think my server was fitted with one as standard.

Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks.

    you'll need to schedule downtime

when we moved from a single filesystem to a couple of raid5'd disks (we're using solaris and fibre attached storage so not quite the same re raid controllers etc), we just told the customer we were stopping their service at 2am, moving hte filesystems and that they'd be back up in a few hours. it depends how much data you have, but if you're striping 3 disks it should be *quite* quick. dont forget to move the mountpoints too
