    Backup large data drives

I'm wondering how companies that offer 1GB and 10GB space do their backup properly ? From experience it seems on well utilized server a regular backup of 10GB takes about 1hr. So people running servers with 200GB data drives , how do they back up witout affecting the performance of the server ?

It seems the only reasonable way to do it quickly and efficiently is to take snapshots.

    Any other ideas ?

Snapshots is going to be the best way to do it. Depending on what exactly you want to setup take a look at rsync as it will only copy over the data that has changed. That should keep the amout of IO down as well as speed it up significantly vs doing something like a compressed backup each night.
