I have spent two years with Canaca, the first 18 months of which were largely uneventful. I prepaid for two years of Gold (shared) service and run a small "hobby" site; I didn't have too many problems with canaca except support's inability to respond to simple, clearly stated inquiries until they began suspending my account for overloading their servers.
The first time it was due to a "php script" and although they sent me a log showing a lot of activity from my account, they couldn't produce the script or its contents; the section of the log they sent me showed me exporting a small phpbb database using phpmyadmin. The second time it was due to a cgi script (I only have one) and I determined bots were crawling it, so I installed a robots.txt file. Both times, the site was down for about 10 hours and they would not respond to my requests to call me or bring the site up - their e-mail said "please fix the problem" yet they would not allow me access to the account.
The third time, I noticed several hours after the site was down that it was suspended; again, due to the same cgi script taking up 65% of their server resources (it ran for about 23 minutes). They allowed me access immediately that time, but did not notify me about the suspension.
I tried to contact management regarding my problem with the first situation - that support did not adequately respond to my requests for help. I spoke with two people - the first defended support and argued with me - he said their support center is "in a different building" (they use many support centers around the world) and would not allow me to speak with his supervisor. The second begrudgingly (sighing loudly) said she would send a message to someone and IF they contacted her, she would contact me. I never heard from anyone.
Last odd thing I'll mention - at one point my phpbb was giving the error "error trying to connect to the database." When I looked at phpmyadmin, the database was not in the list. I sent an e-mail to canaca asking about it and received the reply "it appears to be there, we don't know what the problem is" and guess what? It was back.
There is no phone support. There is no chat support. The ticket system is virtually impossible to navigate - there are links to the individual ticket but no navigation to see a list of all tickets. Their knowledgebase has 16 topics http://www.canaca.com/contactus/?_a=knowledgebase and the FAQ has 66 topics (incomplete; try finding it without google) and some answers aren't easy to understand.
I've seen canaca's responses to poor service on WHT - essentially they say that they can't please everyone so they aren't even going to try. I wish I had seen these comments two years ago.
Most hosts will have problems from now and then and mysql issues do happen but shouldn't happen often.
I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Canaca but I hope your future hosting experiences will improve.

I had a friend a while back who tried Canaca. It was nice until they decided to overcharge on his card, and cause an overdraft charge. Avoid at all costs, heh. I managd his vps myself, and I thought they were pretty neat until he started screaming at me that they overcharged. Afterwards, i felt bad, because i had recommended him to use them.
Yes - Gold service offers ridiculous amounts of space and bandwidth for $17/mo (prepaid for 2 years). I understand nothing will ever run 100% smoothly - I don't have unreasonable expectations, however I prefer not to do business to companies that don't recognize the need for good customer service.
I reported my original post because I saw a post in the WH Forum mentioning it - someone had replied to their post saying it was authentic. I received an e-mail from WHT showing the domain record:
Topicstarter, I'm very sorry ho hear about your issues with canaca. I understand you perfactly well because I had nearly the same problems with my previous host. Its prices were really not very high but I had downtime very often and it got on my nerves. Since that time I've decided to pay more and to get much better service. I hope you'll find the host that suits you well.
