IRC: SoftLayer allows the use of private internet relay chat servers for communication among private parties. SoftLayer absolutely prohibits the use of IRC servers connected to public IRC networks or servers. IRC servers that result in interference of service, malicious network activity or increased demand on network security services are in direct violation of the acceptable use policy. Violation of the IRC policy will result in methods of resolution under the acceptable use policy.
Each server comes standard with 1 Primary IP address and 4 secondary IP addresses. You can order additional secondary IP addresses at the time of your server order in the following quantities:
8 IP Addresses $4 per month
16 IP Addresses $12 per month
32 IP Addresses $28 per month
64 IP Addresses $60 per month (requires ARIN justification)
128 IP Addresses $96 per month (requires ARIN justification)
I'm sorry, but I have never seen a private IRC network, what do you mean by that? Would it be something like a chat with sales on a website? The thing is, I sell VPS on my dedicated servers and I think your servers are very interesting, but most of my customers run IRC networks on their vps. Am I right to assume I cannot get one of your servers then?
The best way I know how to answer this question is to outline our TOS/AUP policies as simple as I can.
- SoftLayer does not seek, nor do we want to be, the content police. We go to great lengths to protect the rights, use and privacy of web services for all of our users.
- In saying that, if individual actions infringe upon the rights, use or privacy of other users, we must step in to balance those rights.
- Generally speaking, anything that is legal by local, state, and federal law is allowed on our network.
IRC and other similar type web resources are invaluable tools to legitimate users. They also pose tremendous internet threats if exploited. My recommendation is: if you feel as though you have a fairly good grasp of this type of service and you monitor your customers use of it, you should be fine. If you plan on throwing this up and not monitoring potential abuses from your customers, I would warn against it is use.
If you are unfamiliar with the concept of Private IRC servers or specifically what your customers are using IRC for, you may want to spend some additional time speaking with them and research exactly what type of IRC activity they are engaging in.
Once you have that information in hand, please email me at [email protected], and I can let you know if their activity would be a violation of our AUP.
