    Unhappy Sorry Newbie support question

    Sorry, Im a total newb and I just bought my first dedicated server and I wanted to start a hosting company... JUST KIDDING!

    Well anyways, this maybe the wrong forum but I just bought a server off of serverbeach.com and so far they have been great. This my first dedicated box and Im not to fimular with linux(im 1337 with windoze).

    My question is, is the following infomation look faulty to you as well?

    Note: This is not to slam serverbeach! I am trying to setup my server and I believe this is MY issue, not theirs. I just got my box and havent done anything to it. It is a beta box and Im going to try and set it up before I send them a trouble ticket for my stupidity.

    Maybe the nic is setup wrong?

    I read a thread on the rackshack forum about the ethernet card being set to the wrong media causing collisions. This may be the case but I dont know because im an Idiot.

    The speed is really slow. You should definitely contact them about this. This could be caused by many factors.

    I guess I should be happy with my 8 mb/s I got this week with my server at fdcservers. This was an exception, but a very pleasant one.

    Have you considered that the server you are connecting to might have connection problems?

    That's a pretty high percentage of collisions. Something's not right.

    I'm also getting poor performance to that site via RoadRunner... maybe there's a peering problem or something...

    There was a beta period with special discounted price. They were offering it because their a new company. It was only going to last a month or so.

    Anywho:

    I get faster speeds then this on my cable modem. And according to Serverbeach, there is no problem.

    I feel that my money might be better spent elseware. I am going to tinker around for the box for about another week and hopefully I can get the speed to improve. If it doesent I may have to consider finding a diffrent host.

    When I do a "wget ftp://ftp.uu.net/uumap.tar.Z" I see about ~450KB/s ... are you sure it wasn't a temporary problem?

    I'm also on server beach.. and when I performed the same I receieved the file at 500-600
