Thread: Hosting Poll

    Hosting Poll

Just taking a hosting poll here to determine what other hosts are doing as far as CPU resources go.

The question is what is your daily cap [percentage] that each hosting account can use.

If you are not a host your replies are welcomed as well. Trying to see if there is a industry standard and also need to determine if I am within the norm or need to raise the daily cap.

    Thanks!

We don't have a limit, but if a site is using 3% or more constantly and if it becomes an issue for other customers then we email the customer first with a warning regarding the cpu usage.

I would say on a shared environment, 3% would be a good standing point. If a client is continuously using over 3% we would most probably recommend them our semi-dedicated plans or VPS.

I would say 3% is also a safe number but this really depends on your hadware configuration. A dual CPU server is going to handle 3% load much better than a single CPU P4 for example.

How exactly do you determine CPU usage?

Technically, it is against the rules for any hosts to reply to your question. We can provide general figures and we can discuss the issue at hand, but a host cannot talk about their own service and saying what their CPU cap is, would be doing exactly that.

I would just leave it to the moderators to determine what is or isn't considered service information. What you're saying is if someone asked if they recommend using cpanel with both rvskins and fantastico would be inappropriate because answers would indicate if cpanel, fantastico or rvskins is available as a service. The forum is intended to provide information to those who want to search or ask information so they may apply it or make a decision on hosting for themselves.

I never stopped anyone from replying, I'm simply warning them before they think about it.

You are comparing apples and oranges. It would be the same as someone posting asking hosts who provided "cpanel with both rvskins and fantastico" and hosts replying saying they did. That is against the rules.

I believe this question really depends on the type of setup -- higher end servers will be able to handle higher loads, when lower end servers could probably take half the load. Its very similar to the question of "how many customers can I have on my server".

What I am saying is this thread is intended to provide information and not your opinion on what is or isn't valid. If you feel something isn't then report it so it is handled appropriately. Anyway, I am not going to continue on this topic and leave this thread as I have already provided an appropriate answer to the thread itself.
