I not sure if this is the right forum… I have a Windows application that I want hosted. It is an application that will require an opened port so it can receive TCP/IP connections. I'm sure shared hosting will not allow such an application. So, do I need a dedicated server, a semi-dedicated server, or will a virtual server do?
Would hate to get in to the whole VPS vs Dedicated discussion and wont but with price of low end dedicated server being as low as they are might as well go with a dedicated server if you think this pet project will ever get to be more then that.
For the freedom aspect, you'll want dedicated, but stay away from unmanaged unless you really know what you are doing. I'd recommend looking at http://interserver.net for one of their low-cost custom managed dedicated servers starting at $105.50 for Windows Server 2003.
You want to get yourself a managed VPS, it will be cheaper than even a low end unmanaged dedicated server and you will probably have a more stable provider. If you don't know what you're doing, you need to go managed, otherwise your server will be exploited before you even login.
