Hello, just a quick question that I was hoping some of the regulars around here might be able to help me with.
I host a fairly busy PHPBB message board. On a normal day it may sit at about 60 users online at a time, and then head towards 100 in the evening, and stay pretty constant in that area for a while.
Once a year there are a couple days where it's just insane, holding 200+ users for a couple hours, and we've peaked at 361 online at once. In the grand scheme of things, it's just your basic phpbb message board, broken into 3 fourms, but darn busy. (a lot of people visit looking for information but don't post).
Bandwidth can be anywhere from 300MB to over one Gig per day on those peak days. Hits can get up to about 7 million per month.
Currently with a provider on a shared server but not happy with their uptime. From what I know it may seem like most shared servers wouldn't take our message board because of the CPU load, therefore I'm assuming it's time to look at something else.
Hi. If you are planning growth and can afford it (the normal way is google ads) then a VPS might be a good option, though unless you can afford ~$25 for just 1 website you'd have to have experience with Webmin or something similar.
Some larger hosts use very powerful servers so that they can put more users on 1 server. If you can get a hosting package with a big host which uses powerful servers then thats a good idea. Ask them first as I think you'll be able to find a shared host which will take you.

A $25 VPS will be able to support less resources than a $10 shared hosting account.

I wouldn't consider myself a complete novice as I've gotten this far, but certainly not an expert either.
After contacting one of the companies mentioned here in another thread, and gave them a bit of an overview of my requirements they were suggesting a VPS with:
25GB storage (way more than I need)
700GB bandwidth (once again way more than I need, but maybe look at sub-letting it off for other sites)
512MB guaranteed RAM
12GB max ram
417.7 Guaranteed CPU 2x3133.4Mhz Max CPU
It's $60/month or $600/year. A bit more than I really want to pay, but looking at all of my options. I'm assuming this would be plenty of cover my resources needed? Is it going overkill?
And with this it sounds like I'd be 'on my own' a little bit when it comes to set-up and such, which I'm not sure I'm ready to leave home yet hahaha. But I might be forced out the door.
