    Where to complain and check hosts'records

    Hello,

    You can send your complains against hosts to the Better Business Buro. You can also check the hosts' records there and read about past issues and how they were resolved.

    You will need the company name and city that can be easily found with a whois search.

    I cannot post their URL because I am new here but a google search will locate it.

    Most people just do it here on WHT...

    They complain and review and make up a good amount of records on hosts...

    The BBB is of no use (IMHO) in the cyber world. As stated above if you are a BBB members and somebody complains and the BBB thinks you were wrong you get a "negative review" with the BBB...no more, no less, it does not mean a company will resolve ANY issue unless they want to protect their BBB "ratings" and if they are the kind of people to pay for BBB membership they probably don't get bad ratings anyway...so it's a circle.
    It is useful in a local situation (checking out merchants in a new town) but every BBB office only represents businesses in the town it's in. So what about me? The actual city I am located in has no BBB. And in a nearby "big city" I would have to pay higher rates because of the size of the city and an extra added premium because I am not actually located in that city.
    And I don't have a single client in that nearest city with a BBB. I have them all over but none there...
    Pretty pointless.

    However some buyers feel a twinge of false assurance when they see the BBB logo. The reason I say false is because over 90% of the time they don't call the BBB to see & that company may be a BBB member with a dozen unresolved complaints. (I experience this a great deal with another industry I do consulting work for, people complain that "well it said they belonged to the BBB", I ask "what was their rating when you called?" they say "well I didn't call, I thought you HAD to be reputable to be a member of the BBB"....OOPs...and that is no fault of the BBB but you would be amazed how many people think that.)

    One thing is for almost sure, IF a host is really bad somebody has griped here. And most hosts are more worried about here (& other host forums) than the BBB.

    I don't know, maybe everybody loves the BBB, I really have nothing in particular against it....just equaly nothing for it.
    In my area it seems like it costs a LOT of money to belong to something that basically says you agree to respond to complaints. (not resolve to the customer's satisfaction, just respond to the BBB's satisfaction)

    Also LOTs of the complaints here are the result of "cut & run" outfits. They sell lots of people on a "too good to be true" deal if you pay in advance then once they get enough $$ and the complaints are coming in because they have 1,500 accounts on a Celeron with 256MB memory they vanish and appear under a new name. The BBB does no good if you don't mind having complaints (the benefit of the logo outweigh the statistical average of people who really call) or if they change names.
    In that other industry I do some work with, there is a guy who some of us knew about... last year his "company" sold thousands of dollars in equipment with payment "up front" then disappeared. People tried to sue him etc. but he seemed to have vanished...

    This year a new company, new name, etc. popped up with 1/2 page color magazine ads for 2 months, a little digging and it turned out to be the same guy.
    Now after being "in business" about a few months about 7 months ago that "company" is gone too with a bunch more people's money this year. But when the "new" company started it had a clean BBB rating...& lots more people lost lots of money.

    Stuff happens, the BBB isn't a bad deal, just nothing new & not for everybody. In hosting it's good to remember the basics "if it sounds too good to be true..." and don't pay for anything for a long-term until you are sure you are satisfied with the company and they will be around as long as your payment.
    Then if you are not happy you only lost one month's costs. Few people get REALLY steamed here about 5 or 10 dollars. They get really mad when they paid for a year in advance then found out the host didn't suit them and they can't get their money back

    I agree that filing a complaint with the BBB against a US company does no good (I've tried). However, I just found out that the BBB will forward complaints on to foreign bodies of like type in other countries if you have a complaint about a foreign company that conducts business in the US. In cases like this, I imagine they may be more advantageous.

    The point regarding the 'assumed' good rating is very valid. It's one I've made before although I haven't been bitten in the *** too hard just yet online at least!

    Well For Hosting related complaints, If you compare WHT Vs. BBB, It would be like comparing a BMW 7-Series to a Daewoo

    Companies with a good reputation have to pay to have a relationship and listing with the BBB, and they don't choose to do it. Plus, this only concerns USA companies...

    The BBB is just another tool to verify Hosts'reliability. If the whois search shows the domain has been online short ago, WTH shows complains for that host and the BBB records displays unsolved complains from the customer's point of view (no matter if the company is a member or not), chances are the host will not be reliable.

    Each action will keep some people from using that host. Two actions will do more than one ... Well, it is just MHO. Hope it helps

    I am not sure why the BBB was brought up here. The only real value I can see with the BBB is that if you're selling something on your site you can put up a BBB logo on it, and that seems to have a re-assuring effect on prospective customers, according to what I've heard.

    I feel I've been around the 'Net long enough (remember Gopher, Pine Mail, Veronica?), and through enough Hosts, good and bad to make some observations, and hope Hosts and Renters alike consider my ramblings.

    As I roam through lists of hundreds of Hosts searching for that perfect match to end up in a long-term relationship, several things are clear - to me:
    1. Anyone can set up a Reseller account and sell hosting space. With a little wordsmithing, some creative editing, cheap templates soon look like a huge company offering up - what most already do.
    2. I jerk away from the sites that are obviously set up by some kid with a big allownace that wants to collect porn and warez by letting others run those sites for him.
    3. Most Hosts offer the same things, but in a different way. For example, "Free Fantatsico" is like a car dealer saying "Free Tires with every auto purchase and no extra charge for the upholstery if you buy today." Have you seen thos hosts that offer a "expires soon" limited time offer, for over a year!
    4. The big insult to MY intelligence (keep those comments to yourself) is when a host is clearly one, maybe two people calling themselves a "team" or trying to look as big as Microsoft!
    5. Everyone guarantees pretty well the same thing, Cpanel, WHM, CGI, uptime yadda... yadda... so what do we/I look for? PRICE!
    6. One thing I find hard to do is test the Host. It seems many Hosts don't have their web site on the same server as their customers. If they did, they'd improve speed, be up longer and would know how it feels to be crawling through web pages. Not all, enough.

    That is not to say I don't appreciate Hosts. Saves me having to invest in a dedicated server at those prices. But when I search and compare, I see everyone offers the same things at different prices. Sure I'll opt for the most space at the cheapest I can deal with. It's like Poker. A Host deals the cards, I anty in, and then Call. I only bet what I am willing to lose.

    There should be a database of those cut&run guys, listing their Names, addresses, servers used - BEFORE there are so many complaints that governments step in to control it all.
