When is it high server load?

    I have a reseller package with hostgator.com
I dont actually sell webspace but i manage a few sites.

Today my sites went offline and i was told it was high server load so the
    http was reset.

I saw the "status" page on my cpanel and noticed it showed this:

    1.39 (4 cpus)

    What do these numbers mean?
How high can they go before my site goes offline again?
    Thanks.

Your on a dual proc machine. 1.39 is not (to me) considered high on that type of machine.

On a dual proc machine, they can get up there before httpd needs a restart. However, they have to find the root cause of the problem...unless they want to keep restarting httpd.

    thanks for the quick response.
can you elaborate on what "up there" means. can you give me a ballpark number.
Im going to be keeping an eye out on that particular stat.
    Thanks!

1.39 on a Dual Xeon (what hostgator run) is not high all.

That number refers to the average number of processes queued waiting for cpu time in the last minute

Less than 1.0 per CPU is acceptable. so on that server I wouldn't be worried unless the numbers are frequently sustained over 4.0

Occasionally when a server is performing a resource intense task (eg running logs) it may spike up a bit, but that should only be for a brief period

I believe there was high load before you checked on the status... The status your looking at in your control panel is after restart.

If you server load does not exceed CPU NUMBERS*2, It is reasonable.

The server load can easily go into the 10's, and 20's temporarily and you won't even notice. If you are backup up websites, and another user logs in and starts backup up their website, at 11:00 AM on a weekday when spam and traffic is hitting the server full force. The load will be high.

A load of 10 for several hours means you need to take action to get the load down. And it's nice to see it idling at .5 all day, but they are made to work - not eat hay.

You should update that kernel and reboot. There's been a few good reasons to update and reboot in the last 100 days.

Hi, It's a shared hosting server, only provide httpd(php),ftp service, maybe there are no important updates need to reboot IMO
