I am looking for a new host as my contract with ipowerweb is ending soon. Some people from the phpbb forum suggested I change Hosts. I have a frontpage site. I use phpbb and would like to get help with that when needed and I have a photo gallery that I would like to migrate over somehow. I really am willing to pay for someone to provide assistance with moving the site over since I do not have time to fool with it. But , of course, want to limit costs also. Classic have cake and eat it too delima.
My site is currently ~ 2 GB. I don't know what we currently pay. $7 a month? I would easily pay double that if I could get a real person on the phone without too much hassle. I don't know what you mean by transfer.
transfer is the amount of bandwidth your site uses every month. for a host I would recommend one that is willing to help you move as all hosts won't be there for you, the best way to go about this would be to contact the support team and ask questions, the one that appears to be the mos helpful is the one I'd stick with.
Servage is good, they offer front page support and their support staff answers my email support requests usually within 5-10 minutes...never had a problem with them. You might have to set up phpBB on the site, they offer 110 Gb space and 1110 xfr, just a thought...($7.50/mo).
I recently had a BIG problem with getting HostGator to make my FrontPage-dependent websites work when I first moved them to HG a few weeks ago. It took them at least three days to make FrontPage work for the server that I had moved my domains to.
Since then it's been clear sailing, everything working well.
My advice: HG is probably an "ok" choice for hosting FP websites, if you consider the following suggestions:
1) Do NOT change your DNS nameserver settings until you're sure everything is working with FP on your new HG-hosted servers. Don't let them try to tell you that you have to change the nameservers in order to test. You don't.
2) TEST TEST TEST - make sure that you can really "publish" to the new location with FP and that all your FP-dependent web objects work on the new site.
3) Do NOT try this over a weekend. I was told by HG support staff that HG support staff is very thin on the weekends (when I was trying to move over a weekend and I was experiencing waits of 8 or 9 hours for responses to my support tickets regarding the FP problems.)
4) If you DO find that FP doesn't work on the new HG servers, Do NOT listen to them when they tell you that FP isn't working because FP is trash and you really shouldn't expect them to get it working and that you should switch to Dreamweaver and give up on FP and not ask them to get FP working.
Other than that, you should be ok moving to HG. Once I got through that awful startup period, things have worked well and their servers seem to be REALLY fast. Others have reported that they had no problems with FP on HG servers, so perhaps mine was an isolated exception to the rule.
