is it a lot of trouble? can you get free chatroom hosted for my site?

am I gonna get cyber-raped becase I am running an IRC chatroom?

IRC is just another medium. It's just like AIM, you can disconnect the client if you want.

Theres a ton of different servers on the internet, they all have different registration processes, but they are all free.

I dont think you'll get "cyberraped", not even sure what you mean by that.

Do you plan on having an applet for your website? Some of those will make the connection from your hosting server, to the irc network, which can be against the rules. If the connection is from the user's computer to the irc network, you don't have anything to worry about.

There are many different irc networks out there. My channel is on irc.webhostingtalk.com . Setting one up is pretty easy, just connect and run /join #yourchannelname . Then type /msg nickserv help register to register your nickname, then type /msg chanserv help register for help registering your channel.

Your best bet is to setup a channel on Freenode, www.freenode.net

They will give you a channel free. If you want an applet, than PJIRC is what you want.

I like PJIRC as an applet.

If you are looking for a network to have it on, I would recommend using one of the bigger ones (efnet, quakenet, dalnet, freenode).

I wonder if IRC is still as popular as it was few years back when there were no IM.

Maybe I'm just too old now for this.. :/

    That's on EFnet alone.
