I am new here and I am glad I found this site. I am planning on hosting a forum and need web host recommendations. I will be using wowbb and although I am just starting I hope to have several hundred members in a short time. I like the idea of hostgator but I am scared after hearing they will cut you off if you exceed there 25 mysqel(?)
How about powweb? While price is a factot, I would rather pay a bit more and be happy with my choice and also keep my members happy.
You just answered your own question. If you are running a serious web site, its always worth it to spend a few extra dollars and get a serious web host.
Also, for forums, make sure the host offers a minimum of daily backups. Even then, you may want to do periodic backups yourself, to make sure. For a forum, this is critical.

How many members you have doesn't determine your MySql size or usage by itself.
A lot depends on your concurrent users, the size (in KB) of your posts, (basically the number of database calls and continual load on the database server)
So A few hundred users really doesn't say much.
We have clients with hundreds of users and fairly active forums that never strain anything. But you might have another type forum/posts/user behavior where 200 users could be banging a server hard...all depends on your forum & users.
(Example 2 clients, we have had both for a long time, one has over 1K users, the other just under 400. While neither strains anything, the under 400 one uses more resources on the average day than the over 1K user client...different software, different user behavior, etc.)

I run around 20 forums, and frankly there's only one that probably wouldn't fit into a standard shared hosting account, but that's because it's a Big Board.
A forum only really needs specialist hosting concerns once it starts getting really sizable, but any decent host should be able to cope with at least general activity on small forums, let alone new ones.
I am looking at using wowbb. I also am looking at spending not more than around $20 to start and upgrade as necessary.
You shouldn't have any problems finding a good quality host with your budget. I would make a list of front runners and then e-mail all of them the same questions. For instance you may want to know how the host will handle your account if your board gets too large for regular shared hosting. And what the costs of an upgrade will be. Just some suggestions.
