    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingray

Dasyatids swim with a "flying" motion, propelled by motion of their large pectoral wings (commonly mistaken as "fins").

Their stinger is a razor-sharp, barbed or serrated cartilaginous spine which grows from the ray's whip-like tail (like a fingernail). It is coated with a toxic venom. This gives them their common name of stingrays, but that name can also be used to refer to any poisonous ray.

Dasyatids do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up, usually into the offending foot; it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung "accidentally" by brushing against the stinger. Contact with the stinger causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain and swelling from the venom, and possible infection from parts of the stinger left in the wound, as well as from seawater entering the wound. It is possible for ray stings to be fatal if they sever major arteries, are in the chest or pelvic region, or are improperly treated. Their stingers are normally ineffective against their main predator, sharks.

Just saw the breaking news on CNN.com, I thought I would come here and post it.

There's no words to describe how bad I feel and how sorry I am to his wife and baby... this guy was very entertaining to say the least. I knew what he was doing was risky, but in the end it's not an animal that killed him and that's a bit surprising, anyway RIP Steve Irwin and we shall think of you every time we hear the word "Crikey".

*Correction: after checking news.com.au it seems he died from a sting and not from a marine accident as reported on CNN.com, we'll have to wait and see I guess but I give more credibility to news.com.au since it's in Australia.

How do you figure it's not an animal that killed him?

That's my point. it WAS an animal

Sucks though. I can sure think of a lot more deserving recipients of a painful death than him

My mistake, I didn't realize they meant that by "marine" accident... I thought more like a boat collision or something.

You have to admit, it's a fitting end to his life, ya know? i mean he died doing what he loved.

I was thinking the same thing but I can't stop thinking about his baby, won't have a father but at least he'll be proud of him that I'm sure.

A bad way to start a day...

I have dived with rays (and sharks for that matter) on many occasions and they definitely are not aggressive, so either it was a freak accident or he did something really silly.

Regardless of wether or not you liked his style, he was undoubtedly a unique Aussie and will be missed.

Drop Aussie Bob in a swimming pool full of crocodiles with a server tied to his leg.... if he makes it, give him a show.

I hate to say it, but this guy almost had a death wish... he was really crazy with some of his stunts... . While I know some of the "close" stuff was simply camera angle, some of it was not. He pushed it too far.

My 13 year old niece is going to be devastated. No joke… she only watched animal planet and whatever channel this guy was on…. She knew all his shows…. I'll bet all the money I have she will cry tomorrow...

    Crocodile Hunter... dead...

Am I a bad person for imagining him barely letting out a "crickey" before passing?

I'm pretty sure that's a free pass to hell, but I'm not sure.

Croc Hunter Irwin killed by stingray

    Just saw this on news

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has died in a freak marine accident while shooting a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef.

The 44-year-old is believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest while he was diving.
