Question Help me find out why are my load averages so high

This box should have virtually no activity, but for some reason something is causing load. I cannot figure it out so I'm coming here.

Here is a printout from top:

You seem to have a lot of memory used there and you seem to be swapping as well.

Can you paste the result from:

    ps auxf
    free -m
    cat /proc/cpuinfo

    It's dedicated. 1/4gig ram; 2ghz celeron.

I can't believe 1/4 gig doesn't do it nowadays. Has linux/apache become that bloated? Back in Y2k, I had a P2 350 with 1/4 gig that had way more traffic then this thing has. Like 750k hits/day and the bottleneck was my T1 connection.

It seems like those apache processes are taking a lot of ram. Maybe I should tweak the httpd.conf file?

Depends but even 512 is not good enought if you use MySQL, CPanel, SpamAssassin ... If it is really loaded server maybe 2GB of RAM is OK You may make some optimisations but I not sure will help you a lot with 256MB of RAM.

    Thanks for the reply.

I don't know. The 20 apache processes don't look right. I don't see all of them when I do a top.

I probably also don't need all the secure servers as the only thing that is used for is admin.

I'm open to suggestions. All the sites I host I host for friends or myself and don't charge so I can experiment and not worry about pissing paying customers off.

I'm confused. Both tops I posted have iowaits of 0.0%. Isn't that what we want?

You should try lighthttpd - has a smaller memory footprint and works great.

I've tweaked my httpd.conf.... brought the StartServers and MaxSpareServers down.

    MaxClients 150
    MinSpareThreads 25

Anyone think that there are stalled processes creating a false load average?

howard, having such low minspare and maxspare servers is going to make your apache processes thrash.

think, you have a maximum of 150 client slots. what happens if one moment you need 50, apache will try to make sure there's between 52 and 56 free servers.

say the next moment, apache needs 40 servers, it wants between 42 and 46 free servers, but just one moment ago it had somewhere between 52 and 56, and needs to kill some.

then the next moment, apache needs to service 60 requests, but only has somewhere between 42 and 46 slots, so it has to create 14-18 new slots just to service the requests, then another 2-6 slots to meet the min/max spare clients.

all this unnecessary client creation and teardown is going to significantly increase your cpu usage. if you're running out of ram from having too many apache clients, reduce maxclients, not minspare / maxspare

minspare / maxspare, i would recommend for a server with 150 maxclients, say 10/30. on my servers i use more, but thats because my site uses more maxclients and is more heavily trafficked. 10 / 30 should work fine for your other configurations.

without looking into things too deeply, i notice you've only got 256mb ram. thats really not a lot if you're trying to host 150 client slots, mysql, and other basic server stuff. you're either going to need more ram, or find ways to strip out every bit of overhead in your apache / mysql / operating system.
