I changed a feature on the spam filters on my personal email to not delete anymore. I wanted to see how many spam I am actually getting. I usually get about 10 per day that make it thru, for which have Qurb for my Outlook that finish them off when they reach me.
I figured, ok, spam filters must not be working because I am getting about 10 per day still. Low and behold, I just tried counting all the ones Qurb caught for Sept 01. I had emptied my Qurb spam folder. The scroll bar is now tiny. I tried counting. I got to 500 and gave up.....and I wasnt even halfway!
Ok, so I turn my email spam feature on the server back to delete..... I decided 10 spam each day still making it thru to my inbox (out of thousands a day) isnt really all that bad...LOL
Spam filter on your local comuter is the only one more filter.
the main filter is on your web server where you have your mailbox.
When I look at rejected mail log on my server it show me 12452 rejected mails /today (I should divide it to number of email accounts, not sure, maybe 30-40) but this is the half of day,
Spammers need tracking down and prosecuting where possible. If you then find that 90% of spam originates in say China, then just block China by IP range. I can count on one hand how many orders I have had from China but I have no clue at all about how many spams.
Yup... I choose though to review all spam emails before they get deleted. Unfortunately no spam filter is perfect and so I do find some important emails being marked as spam and some spam emails being marked as not spam.
I abandon email accounts that fall into the hands of spammers, and I don't rely on spam filters. Yahoo email puts mail that it thinks is spam into the Bulk folder. Since I don't expect to get spam I will check what's in there if the display shows a new message in the Bulk folder. Sometimes real emails are put there. Marking them as being not spam usually trains the Yahoo spam filter to stop doing that for a given sender. Still, the moral of the story is that some email will get lost if you have spam filtering turned on, and if you have too much spam going into the bulk folder to inspect the contents.
