whata u think about this deal?

    1.2 GigHz
    512 Ram
    17 Gig HD (SCSI)
    Win 2000 Advanced
    SQL Server 2000 (license provided)
    1 IP
    daily DB backup
bout 70 Gig transfered (figured from log files) / month (but host claims that sometimes I am using more than a t1 ... > 3 MBits sustained at peak times)

it is costing me 450 / month .. no setup fee ...

this is my first dedicated box and i am just wondering if i got a sweet deal? decent? or if i got suckered

Who is the comapny? Honestly I find that a very bad deal...

Check out www.rackshack.net or www.serverbeach.com or www.nocster.com to compare prices.

He is using Windows. Non of these three offer Windows.

$450/mo is not too bad for Windows with SCSI. I am sure you can find cheaper, but if you like the host, then this is not a bad deal. Maybe contact them and say you want a better deal. They should give it to you if you have been hosting with them a while.

A very bad deal? It's a Windows 2000 server with what seems to possibly be a SCSI hard drive. RackShack is not a price guide! None of the providers you listed even offer Windows 2000 servers.

That's true, I forgot he was on Win2k and the other three don't offer Win2k. oops...

it is SCSI ... sorry forgot to mention that

the host is www.gearhost.com ... and the claim for the price is because of the BW stats i posted ....

    thanks for the input!

Question Forgot to ask abt SQL License.

Did you bring your own SQL License or Are they providing the license in the cost?
If you brought your own, then its a bad bad deal. Otherwise you may be okay. I think infortech.net 's basic SQL package is $399/mo.

Actually Paras you forgot to leave out that we helped custom program your application on MANY occasions, provided the SQL Server 2000 License as well as the Windows 2000 (not a big deal) license. I wouldn't call it a bad deal either but I'm a bit partial .

    Edited to add the following:

Ohh and don't forget you use a concurrent 3+ MBPS SUSTAINED at peak times, always 1+ MBPS. Again, nothing a client needs to be worried about but it's not your bandwidth that would concern me but your sustained connections. Low times your at about 500+ users online EVERY second. About 3000+ users EVERY second at high times.

If you guys knew what kind of site this guy runs (which he personally asked me to not show) you would understand. And no, it's not porn, which is against our SLA.

    450 a month seems a bit pricey

let me clear up a few things ...
i would (and have) highly recommended using gearhost. I have been pleased with how much they have helped me with my site and been able to handle my service needs...

i was just curious about the rates as this is my first experience with dedicated hosting ...

  12. #12
    Hey ryan,

relax man, he was just asking some people opinions, considering it is his first dedicated server, he should be informed. $450 bucks is a decent amount of chump change....

pdawg, i would suggest you go to the Hosting Requests forum, and post exactly what you need, tell them what type of resources you use, and then let the offers roll in. When you get the offers, research the hosting companies, and see how they compare to gearhost.

    That's just my $0.02.

Will do DealSpree . I wasn't by anymeans attacking or standing up for the argument, just playing with you Paras (pdawg), havn't had my morning coffee . Paras knows me and even though we get into it every once and a while (in the past with software and now with server config) our releationship is solid, helpful and good ... right Paras? If you answer no I'm going to pull your rack server . He's been working with me personally for about six months so far.

Let me know what you find out but like the others said, take a look around. I'm going to take another look at our pricing structure and go from there as well.

utadmin, it was a joke if you didn't get it. The link you posted isn't a public link either. Our dedicated hosting packages are not public even though we have a good hand full of customers on them. The dedicated section of the website is not accessable at this time.

That is a better deal than we would offer (~$1099.99 per month w/ $499.99 set-up)

    Wait, I'm confused...

With a thread topic of price, I would assume the client needs to be very concerned with bandwidth usage, and un-concerned with connections. Last I checked, most hosts charge for bandwidth, but offer unlimited connections (sorry, couldn't resist that one).

Or maybe you were talking about the well being of his server? Or does Microsoft charge per connection (another feeble attempt at a joke)?

Also, with an average (always?) push of 1+Mbps and sustained peaks of 3+Mbps, the server has to be doing well over 70GB/month of transfer. Something doesn't add up.

But to me, $450/month doesn't sound that bad. Obviously your host has spent some time with you, and added value beyond simply providing a box and a connection.

I think if you get an offer for the same thing at $200/month, your in for some trouble if you take it.

I think what he was trying to point out was the fact that it was no toy box, it was running under a heavy load, working its butt off. For 1-3mbps sustained bandwidth, win2k, sql, etc. thats a great price if you ask me, anyone who shops and compares to rackshack, etc. should be shot

    Thumbs up Looks Good

Looks like a good quote to me.

By the look of it you will get a fair amount of support from your webhost too, which is excellent!

I would personally pay a few dollars more and get a backup solution included.

You can shop around as much as you wish, but a server such as that is not a bad deal in my books.

  23. #23
yeah , forgot to mention that the DB gets backed up daily also ...

well i think from the looks of it the SQL / w2k / tech support make it a reasonable price ... this WHT thing is pretty cool, thanks for all the advice ...
