As a reader/member of WebHostingTalk I would like you to tell me what you look for in getting a dedicated server. If someone was to offer you a dedicated server with the bandwidth and price that RackShack offers what would you look for to make you go with them.
Here are a couple examples:
--Ability to customize your server with your specifications. Including Processor Speed, Hard Drive Size, RAM, etc.
--Ability to choose between Windows 2000 Server and Linux.
--Ability to choose which kind of control panel (if any) you would like. If you had a choice of many different Control Panels. Some free and fee based.
--Ability to have certain sofwares installed on your server free of charge for thsoe who are not knowledgable enough to setup there server.
--Friendly technical support available 24/7.
--Bandwidth availablity similar to RackShack while NOT using COGENT as primary uplink.
--Quality NEW hardware. All good branded hardware from national manufacturers. No server would have been previously used.
I would like everyone to e-mail me or write up a following post on what they would look for in a dedicated server using some of the above as examples. Please let me know.....
If you open yourself up to everyone having Windows based servers at RS prices you must be begging for trouble, first off, TCO, it is VERY high. Then remote administration, you would then HAVe to have a windows control panel because there is nothing really good built into windows to admin it, and then you would get all of the people new to dedicated hosting wanting windows because they think they know windows but have no clue about a server, and in the end would end up with open mail relays, new worms that hit windows.
I think you might want to rethink that, or charge some massive upfront fee for setup and control panel and MS fees.
(Unless you mean like a windows 98 box with VNC installed )
Have OpenBSD pre-installed, have good tech support, user managed reboots, firewall protection for everyone, option for managed server at just $99 a month more (limit of 3 hours/month or so), 64IP addresses at no cost.
Oh, I think I am just dreaming now.
And personally some of the cogent only places are as fast or faster for me, I could care less if cogent is one of the suppliers, but please not the only one, and don't rely on them for service when you need it. (Summary: Don't oversell while counting cogent bandwidth in there)
