you should read up on them dude, they aren't simply so you can save a document. the delay in cycle is to give you time to gracefully shut down your system. some have scripts so power outages trigger them to automatically shut down your system without just shutting it off which is a bad idea.
Still why pay a few hundred to buy one when you should have your whole house on a surge protector trip system, it’s also allot cheaper to buy a surge protector board... which most now also protect your phone line leading to your router/modem.

The main use for UPS is a system to keep your computer running while there is a disturbance in the power grid eg... loss of power... so you can safely shutdown and not lose any data that you may have been working on.

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS), sometimes called an uninterruptible power source, is a device which maintains a continuous supply of electric power to connected equipment by supplying power from a separate source when utility power is not available.
I also never knew that UPS always provide power from batteries from my understanding they only use batteries when the main power source is stopped.

I'm not saying your wrong, I’m just saying the average PC user does not have an UPS connected to there system as they do not see it as a nesacary item.

Anyway who cares about UPS, quite honestly if the power died for a bit I'd enjoy the extra sleep.

I personally have a UPS that can hold my internet connection and laptop for a max of 10 minutes, but if I needed to, I think my internet connection could run on my UPS for up to 30-45 minutes, as I could just use my battery on my laptop.

    At any rate:

    HP Pavilion Laptop zd8000
Pentium IV 3.0 GHz w/ HT
    60 GB HDD
    1 GB of Physical Ram
    ATI Radeon X600 128 MB
    17" Widescreen
    CD RW/DVD Combo
    Win XP

I think that covers the basics.

    Seagate are fairly good drives
Steer clear of Samsung, the two drives I have prematurely fail on me were both Samsung.

You'll notice a difference between SATA and IDE but it's only slight indeed.

On a server end, I tend to steer away from Seagate. From my experience from a while ago, Seagate is the most unreliable brand of HD's to use.

Would you say Seagate have been quieter than other drives?

I've read some other storys about Samsung being pretty bad.

Yeah the Seagates I have are reasonably quiet, I ditched a 120 GB Maxtor in my Linux machine because it was too noisy

I've had problems with Maxtor before but not Western Digital or Seagate. The Raptors were the best drives you could buy at the time, and were the only TRUE Sata drives for a number of years. I've had a seagate baracuda too that was great.

Right now I'm using WD 500GB drives because of price. But they've been great, and I've never had a problem with WD.

I would recommend Western Digital, scribby. No problems out of them yet.

It's not the best although it certainly does everything I need it to, and on top of this, it didn't cost a lot at all.

who builds there own PC's? or do you buy pre-made/brand PC's?

I've always built my own PC's since my first one back in 2002

  24. #49
I think that I've only ever had one pre-built desktop pc, and that was back in the early 90's. Since then I have only had cusotm built pc's built by myself, I've always found that this means I get exactly what I want from the machine! However, since finishing University, I barely use my desktop now, as I just dont need the power of it anymore. All of my current work is carried out using my laptop on my dining table!!
