Well its come time to build a new system once again and I on WHT to get a few questions answered and some suggestions. After seeing a few benchmarks on the Intel Core Duo and the AM2 socket I can't make up my mind. I debating between an AM2 x5000+, AM2 FX-62, or an Intel Core Duo CPU. Can someone give some advice. This rig will be used for gaming and I plan on coupling it with 2-4gb of ram and 2 7900GTX's or 1 7950 GTX. If you lean one way or another advice on the intel mobos would be appreciated. I am on planning on sticking with the ASUS boards if I go AMD since I am using them now and they're great.
If you really are going to get 2-4 gb's of quality ram, 2 7900GT's, etc than you might as well spend $800 or whatever the core duo 2 is at to take advantage of the raw power. That's personally what I'd do...
I am not quite sure what kind of benchmarks you have been seeing, because the Core 2 Duo dominates the X2, FX-62. When you look at the benchmarks, you have to take into consideration, that the price for an FX-62 is about: $827.00 , and so therefore when you are looking at the Conroes, you have to be comparing it with the Core 2 Duo E6700 which has a price tag of $550.00. The X6800 is the top of the line model, but that goes on the market for $1k, so let's give AMD some slack.
Here you can see that even the E6600, gets a considerable lead over the FX-62.
About the other components, having built several gaming machines myself, I would suggest:
- E6600 or E6700 CPU
- 4GB of DDR2-800 RAM, OCZ has a few on sale, I saw some for $199.99 CDN at Direct Canada
- ASUS P5N32-SLI
- I would go with 1 7950GX2, simply for expansion potential. Drivers aren't very good yet for QUAD-SLI, but they will be soon. So you have the possibility of having that.
- One thing you forgot to mention was harddrives. Harddrives are CRUCIAL for gaming, for optimum performance get a pair of Raptors in RAID-0 or 3 Raptors in RAID-5.
