A and CNAME: what's the dif?

    Long story. What I have:
    a.com registered, nameservers ns1.registrar.com etc., A records
a.com and *.a.com and www.a.com all to IP for host.com

    b.com nameservers ns1.registrar.com etc. A.records
    b.com and *.b.com to ns1.registrar.com url forwarders,
    www.b.com to a.com's IP host; b.com mask-url-forwarded to a.com/xxx.htm
    b.com parked on a.com host

    ...what I am *thinking of*

Google offers free hosting but wants CNAME record for target domain. I figure
CNAME for a.com will likely blunder b.com's access to host.com: right?

What's the difference, in general, and especially, here, between the definition, and the effect, of A records versus CNAME records?

Hmm not sure I've fully understood your situation but, in short terms,
an A record is a hostname pointing to an Ip (v4)
a CNAME makes a domain name an alias of another Fully qualified domain (so b.com not b.com/yaddayadda.html)
    Examples
    a.com in A 62.xxx.xxx.xxx
    ww2.a.com in CNAME b.com
