seems my cpu overloaded tonight running at an average of 15.9 during a 20min busy period, celeron but obviously that cant handle it

Average 1000 posts a week, 500 new members a week

max of 1000 online at any given time.

Currently Active Users: 622 (410 members and 212 guests)

what cpu would you recomend for those stats?

1gb but memory didnt go over 60% odd, the cpu was averaging 15.9 for a good ten mins and was making site run so slow /not work for 10/20 mins when users rushed on

I think you need to use faster CPU, at least P4 or Athlon with 2GB of memory.

i think your cpu is low , celeron servers is very low improve to p4 or d series
600 user online > celeron serves

I would look at getting a p4 2.8 or above, or a dual core processor, either AMD or pentium will do.

If you are configured properly you dont need a real high processor speed.

Also get yourself a 10k rpm drive, scsi or sata if you have a large database, this will help speed things up.

1-2gb ram should be sufficient.

softlayer.com and layeredtech.com have pretty good prices on these configurations.
