The reason why people are running away from Cogent is because they're losing money, and the routing is just plain annoying

as said before, almost all of the carriers are losing money.

and, alot of carriers' routing is plain annoying. level3, yipes, verio, mfn/above, uunet. i've had funky routes with all of them. sometimes it's a pretty good route, sometimes i'm going in circles around the US.

cogent offers a great product on value. they're not the best by any means, but at least give them a little credit for what they've accompished and what they can offer.

and, i agree with sharefile. level3 has sucked for the past week.

Nothing wrong with Cogent at all. In the last few months they seem to have been slowly, but steadily improving from my experience (could well be others have other opinions about this). The Cogent ping from here in Europe to my server in Chicago has dropped about 20 ms over the last few months. Their peering seems to have improved slighly, though somedays I still get a runaround, but other days I go almost straight into Chicago. Cogent uptime for my server has been practically 100% too. Think I've had about 5 minutes Cogent downtime in 4 months...

My cogent experience has been favourable too. I was planning on switching back to C&W, but, at this point, all that will accomplish is thinning my wallet.

Cogent is one of the best carriers around in my opinion. If you match them dollar for dollar for what it would cost you elsewhere, you could probably get cogent and another smaller line with bgp4 for around the same price as half the amount of bandwidth from a "better" carrier. If i were going to say something negative about them, it'd be that their support just sucks, you can call their offices, not get any pickups for hours/days, you can try to fax and get busy signals all day, but their services are still great.

Take a look at this That's actually quite funny, as last year a lot of WCOM's reps said Cogent wouldn't survive that year but look at their stock now. You gotta love this

I have to agree, Cogent is the best bang for the buck. UUnet cost 10 times as much. Nice to see all the people that support Cogent come out of the dark. =P

We have been running Cogent for the past 2 years without a single glitch. There lines have been very reliable for us and I dont see that changing in the future.

I am waiting for cogent to buy out MFN, then ... cogent will be awesome But as of now, cogent has difficulty with peering where I have seen many time, a simple traceroute goes all around the US (approximately 10000 miles or so) before it ended up at a destination only 500 miles away. This is probably not particular to cogent, but cogent seems to be worse than others at this. But if cogent buys out MFN/Above, it will be very interesting to know what will follow.
