Gotta love rackshack (pfft)
Well.. I hate getting a bad server, but what’s worse, is them trying to charge me again for a bad server. In April I got a box with them, turned out to be a lemon from the start. Since I didn't feel like going through the hassle of dealing with them to get it fixed I canceled my account and requested a refund (mind you the server was in my possession for less than 13 hours and never worked properly from the first min). They of course refused the refund but promptly canceled the account, which left me no choice but a charge back. The charge back went through fine, but now they've charged my card again, for the same server, two months later. I'm not angry at them, all I'll do is dispute the charge again, just thought I should put it to light as before hand I just attributed the bad server to it being cheap, but there's nothing to justify charging a customer again several months later for a faulty pos server.

heh i see.
well dont feel alone. my amd athlon xp 1900 server was a melon since i got it.
the replacement was a melon to
ive had 3 ram swaps
3 server swaps
2 hard drive swaps
it was amazing
anyway
finally I got a working server (it actually works -- no problems so far )
so ive had my experiences with rackshack...
also
i was wanting to get that intel celeron 1.3 server today, but, i asked the sales person if it can be upgraded to 1gig of ram, he started going on about the old celerons and how they can't, and how the new celerons can be upgraded, so the i asked again, the celeron on the front page, can it be upgraded??? he told me yes
on the front page, it is labeled as "Intel Celeron 1.3GHz"
So when i goto http://www.rackshack.net/services/index.asp
it says
"*Intel Celeron 1.3GHz Max Memory is 512MB"
now, sales person tells me it can be upgraded to 1gig
yet the site says otherwise
now some might say oh the site is "probably" just out of dated
Well looking at the dozens of problems ive had with rackshack, i did not feel like taking a risk based on the fact that the site is "probably" out dated or whatever, or getting some crazy run around.
rackshack is awesome if you dont get faulty parts or a faulty server...

Youch, glad I didn't stick around to go through what you did.
As far as the celerons go, they really should teach their sales people better.
The reason that they max out @ 512mb ram is because most likley the mboards they are using are based on the slightly older intel chipset, which indeed cannot handle more than 512mb ram. It has nothing to do with the cpu. Its just a low end mboard.KnownHost Managed Services Specialists

That's why I got a Compaq instead of a white box. I've had no problems with it. It seems quite a few of the white boxes they offer are screwy.

I too had problems with two of their XP1900 machines and ended up having to cancel because we couldn't get them fixed. I'm guessing that's why they could offer such a packed system (1 GB of RAM, standard) for so cheap on that particular offer, and why they don't plan to offer them again.
I've been a happy customer of RackShack for over a year and still have nine servers with them, so I don't intend this post to be a put down. Certainly they sometimes struggle with getting in bad hardware, the XPs I think being the worst yet, but as ToastyX says I've heard the Compaq machines run gorgeously.

RackShack TOS...
I have reviewed RackShack's TOS.
http://www.rackshack.net/aboutus/tos.asp
The first line of the TOS read:
*All Payments To RackShack (Everyones Internet) Are Non-Refundable*
and lower down, this:
Refund and Disputes: All payments to RackShack, Inc. are nonrefundable. This includes the one time setup fee and subsequent charges regardless of usage. All overcharges or billing disputes must be reported within 60 days of the time the dispute occurred. If you dispute a charge to your credit card issuer that, in RackShack's sole discretion is a valid charge under the provisions of the TOS and /or AUP, you agree to pay RackShack an "Administrative Fee" of not less than $50 and not more than $150.
Sorry to break it to you bud. But you might be digging a hole deeper and deeper...
Thanks,
BMedia

I'm very much well aware of their TOS. The more they charge me the more i'll dispute it and in the end they will loose more money than I will. I refuse to pay for a server that never worked from the get go, real simple.

Contracts must be binding to both parties to be valid. If they failed to provided a server (a collection of hardware that does not work is not a server) then I would think that you are not bound.
I have a good experience with RackShack. I ordered a white box/20GByteHD and actually received a server with a 40GByte HD. I have had no problems and the server works just fine. I am more than satisfied. I am sorry for your problems.

one of my clients has had bad experience with teh XP1900 server as well..
kernel kept dying randomly due to memory issues, ran memtest and some errors came up.
requested that they test ram and they said all was fine, then they put back only 512MB in, not the full GIG.
requested that they put the other 512MB back in, now they say they have to swap servers because the motherboard has a defect..
wtf!?

Report them to the BBB!
This is the only way to make a statement that you don't take crap from them.

I wouldn't be so casual about chargebacks, it does affect your credit history and excessive amts can cause you problems later on.

I'm aware of that. Althou, in all my years rackshack was the first to have to have a chargeback issued against them, they will also hopefully be the last.

well
chargebacks have no effect on your fico score if the charge is not legit . Its only when the person attempts to chargeback/dispute charges that are legit and are denied the dispute ,and in that case its up to your lender/card issuer. Most card company sway from doing this because its bad business . Would you keep a card that reported to your credit in a harmful manner , if you kept up on your payment and were never late ? i would have to say the person affected the most would be the merchant account holder . A certian amount of chargebacks can lead to the closing of the merchant account , and even being blacklisted with visa and mastercard , etc ....
