Cannot run laptop at 100 basetx

I am having a problem with my DSL. I'm trying to run the card (this is a laptop) at 100 mbps. I'm trying to run it at "force 100 basetx" but it doesn't work at all. I'm running a SMC switch that is capable of 10/100. The computer downstairs is running at 100.

The pci card I have is national semiconductor DP83815/16 10/100 and I'm running Windows xp home edition. The cables I'm using are cat5.

What could be wrong? I don't think I'm doing anything wrong.

Hopefully there is a network guru here.

Edit: I just confirmed that the computer in the next room over (is running off the same switch) is running at 100. So it seems for sure there is something up with my computer. I just have no clue where to start.

When you try to run the laptop at 100, is the laptop plugged in or running off of battery? I know with my laptop when running off the battery it wont give me full speed to help conserve battery life.

This is plugged directly into the DSL modem, right?

No it's not.

There are two separate computers upstairs. They both run to a switch upstairs. The one computer (and all

of the various cable boxes) are running at 100 but my computer (the only one upstairs) is running at 10.

Is the cable good?
Do you have the latest drivers?

I've had problems with uninsulated cables running through floors/walls and losing their signal, plus crappy integrated cards/switches not being powerful enough...does 10mbps work?

If you get a new cable and take it direct to the switch do you still have the same prob? Have you tried a different switch port?

Is this notebook a Dell by any chance (i've seen something simular)...

Try plugging the laptop directly into the modem, that will tell you whether its the laptop or not.

Thanks everyone. I have tried plugging directly into the modem with no luck. The cable definitely is good because it was one of the cables that I just got from my new ISP.

I believe it could be a driver problem. I really can't seem to find updates for my drivers though. The driver I have currently is 2 years old. The driver company's website isn't exactly helpful either. http://national.com I have also tried various driver websites with no luck.

Or also it could be a faulty device...

Thanks for the replies though.
