They are two different recording media (formats), most burners can handle both formats, according to most reports the DVD+R disks are slightly more compatible with more players than the DVD-R.

Hence the difference between "+" and "-"

Its actually about the same compatiblity, dvd-r leading the way with older dvd player support.
