high cpu usage pn server

Hi,

My server's cpu is constantly high. It just started suddenly today. When apache is running, its cpu usage is 70% - 180%. When its stopped, other processes sometimes appear to be taking cpu.

Apache is recompiled several times. Recompilation also takes a lot of cpu.

CPU states: cpu user nice system irq softirq iowait idle
total 189.8% 0.0% 3.8% 0.0% 0.4% 0.0% 5.4%
cpu00 96.3% 0.0% 1.9% 0.0% 0.3% 0.0% 1.3%
cpu01 93.5% 0.0% 2.0% 0.0% 0.1% 0.0% 4.1%

Can you suggest what all could be wrong ??

That was when apache recompile was going on. Processes like gcc, yum etc appeared to add to cpu.

Its the root pid of apache that appears to take over 100 cpu.

Thanks for your response SailorFred.

Try typing 'ps -ax'. That will give you a list of all processes running and a bit of information about them. Without having that list, determining this would be almost impossible.
