machine resets while playing games.. ideas?

hi all,

got a bit of a strange problem that i cant seem to work out - my pc seems to crash when playing games..

it literally just goes blank, and next i see the cmos/bios screen and the machine boots up - doesnt even say 'you are recovering from an error' or whatever, just boots normally

it happens when playing civ4, and it happened when playing valve games and battlefield 2 as well..

i dont remember installing any specific drivers, but i might have..

anyone seen this before can give me any pointers?

Sounds to me like something is hitting its temperature limit. Used to happen on my old laptop. It would reset when it got too hot to prevent it catching on fire!

Also run a memory test to make sure it's not that.

Sounds like a heat problem to me-- it happened to me yesterday when my core temp hit something like 145F and it just shutdown (i was browsing the web....damn heatsink)

Also, shouldn't this be moved to the computer forums?

After all that debating whether we should have one when we finally get one - nobody bothers to use it (including the guy who started the thread asking for it!)

Huh? But shouldn't you use the proper forums...? All those people complaining for one and still 90% of the threads end up in the lounge and get moved, lol.

Let us know how the memtest goes.

ran memtest86 - got some errors in one test the first run. ran it again and didnt get it. will probably run it for longer tomorrow night..

the only other thing i can think of is some sorta directx/gfx driver issue for when games are using it intensively - my machine doesnt crash at any other time, so it *could* be my gfx card..

And you are sure you have a power supply thats strong enough to power your graphics card under load?

Check if your PSU can handle your GFXcard, if you have the newest drivers, and of course, the heat issue.
