IE7 > Firefox ?

Well I used Firefox for a while now, I got tired of the incredibly high memory usage so I decided to install IE 7 beta 3 and I must say I'm impressed.

There's an article on slashdot comparing IE, Firefox and Opera:

According to http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1990855,00.asp , IE would be worse than FF or Opera

So I go to read the article and it does not say that at all...

They conclude: These [FF, IE, Opera] are all fine apps; we recommend you give them each a spin—it's a free download...

I use all three. I use IE 7 and FF more than opera. They are all great.

I also use FF and IE7, IE7 on the laptop because it has only 256 MB of RAM but FF doesn't really affect my desktop since it has 1 GB of RAM.

Notice how opera was the only one that passed the standards compliance test while firefox and IE failed. Opera also used the least amount of memory while in use and had the fastest start up time.

I would never touch another MS browser, I'm done with reformatting every month.

Opera wasn't bad but it was slow at loading some pages like WHT, pages with embedded video and I had to click on the page to be able to scroll down on my laptops touchpad.

That's WHT's end. It's slow for me at times too, especially late at night which is the case with any browser. Otherwise I've never had a problem with opera load times, it seems faster than both IE and firefox.

wow... how does a browser cause you to reformat every month?

J-P has a very good point... I believe most still think 512 alot of ram. After moving from 512 to 768 things were better for me... but once I moved to 2 gb everything moves better - no lags. We have so many apps open now. I have IE express, several browser, notepad, word, and virtual pc open right now.

No one really knows how MS does their magic.

I really think it is all personal taste. Some people may like FF over ie while others my like opera. It really depends on what you are looking for in the software and what you want to get out of it. I like ff for all the things I can add to it to make better use of my time and bandwith but that is just my personal view.

100th post!!

That article was very informative. I think I may try out IE7 when it releases.

Security holes leaving spyware, adware, etc. I'd rather install a virus than use IE again.

hewku made a point. A computer kept clean and up to date, in addition to high ram (1 Gb or more) are the "secrets" to quality browsing, should it be with FF or Opera.

I don't really see how anyone can expect much out of 512mb of ram these days. Seems like we have been stuck on that standard for far too long now.

I got my memory usage to drop doing this:

open a new tab, in the address bar enter; about:config

type "history" into the preference name, and change the browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers to "5" and the "browser.sessionhistory.max_viewers" to "0".

now my memory usage is always low.

I'm using the developer beta 1 of firefox 2.0, and it's pretty awesome. A lot like Opera in several ways.

Just wanted to point out that I'm not trying to bash firefox in my previous posts. I used it for about a year without any problems. It's IE that seems to have the issues. I went from IE's security vulnerabilities to firefox (felt like christmas morning), then eventually switched to opera after trying it and liking how clean and "lightweight" it seemed. Now I just love the mouse gestures.
