How is it possible to recover deleted files after a format?
I know that just because you delete something doesnt mean its permanently gone and it can be recover. But how exactly does that work? How are you able to recover files that have been deleted a long time ago?

When you delete a file it is not removed from the disk, it is just marked as empty space. So if you are lucky and nothing has overwritten the file then you can simply restore them. After a format you will be pretty lucky to get anything decent back because you will of done a lot of writing to the disk with the new install of the OS etc. If you have a big disk though with lots of space you might find something is there.

I've recovered files after formatting my drive. It is possible, you just need the right software.

Hi,
What would the right software be? I would love to retrieve some old files I have foolishly deleted.
Thanks

Disk recovery software... there are a lot of free trials out there if you search google, most will show you the files, but won't actually let you recover them till you fork over X dollars.

"STEVE GIBSON IS THE HEAD HONCHO AT grc.com, THE GIBSON RESEARCH CORPORATION. THAT'S WHERE YOU'LL FIND SPINRITE, THE ULTIMATE DISK RECOVERY"
Leo from CallForHelpTV.com a fairly interesting show. You can also search their site for more references -- they get this question A LOT

I have used EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard in the past, and got decent results. I hope it can help you.

If you've only done a regular format (not low level) and not installed an OS or anything yet, there's a pretty good chance that the files can be recovered by the programs posted. If its important data, there are also drive recovery specialists you can send it to.

You can try using a software called "Getdataback" there is 2 version, one for FAT and NTFS. It is available for download at Runtime Software for free trial run. Try search on any search engine for "Getdataback" you will find it there.

If you want to get rid of your data I suggest you just burn the hard drive that way there is NO trace of anything.
If you want to get back the files you "though" you got rid of there is software and well specialized software that are easily to get hold of in the internet.

I second the suggestion for GetDataBack from runtime. It works like a charm even on drives that aren't quite fully functional (nasty clicks, bad sectors, etc) and for data recovery it is relatively cheap.

You may want to check out the software available from http://www.ntfs.com/ -- I just used one of their products to recover a partition that a customer deleted accidentally.

Try R-Studio
It's better than any other I've tried.

You could try Photorec or Foremost. Both are completely free and open source. I don't know about how effective they are though.
Also if it's Windows, and you haven't formatted, try PC Inspector File Recovery and Restoration. Both are again free.
