Microsoft Virtual PC is now FREE!!!

I often use VPC on my computer to test software, downloads, go to those sites I'd rather not put in my "main computer." You can also test OSs like linux, windows 98, 2000, etc. (This is important for software testers, like myself). This is great news...

Whether Microsoft virtualization technology is an important component of your existing infrastructure or you're just a Virtual PC enthusiast, you can now download Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1 absolutely free. Microsoft is also offering the free download of Virtual PC 2007, with support for Windows Vista in 2007.

Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is a powerful software virtualization solution that allows you to run multiple PC-based operating systems simultaneously on one workstation, providing a safety net to maintain compatibility with legacy applications while you migrate to a new operating system. It also saves reconfiguration time, so your support, development, and training staff can work more efficiently.

Thanks for the heads up. Even though VMWare performs better, I still love Virtual PC and the simplicity of it.

I remember using the 2004 version back when it was beta. Great stuff and very easy to use/setup.

Regards,
Dan

Welcome to the forums!

I paid a $100 for it last year and would have forked over more money for the upgrade.

I have multiple virtual files I use. If you download music, torrent files, etc, this is a must. I consider this a part of my "security program" for my pc...

Still can't believe it is free.... excellent.... Every now and again MS throws us a bone....

I thought it was kind of interesting that this happened at the same time VMWare released their free VMWare Server product. I'd been using the beta for a while running Netware 6.5 and Win2K3 on top of CentOS.

Certainly useful and glad to see there's several choices.

Huh, I thought Microsoft released Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 for free before that.

I've been using VMware for quite sometime and my new place of work uses Virtual PC a lot, but when I first used it, it just felt very slow.

So I did a speed test (same custom unattended XP image) - VMware took 11 minutes 49 seconds and Virtual PC was at 15 minutes and still had atleast four to go (I left for the day at that point).

I'll give Virtual Server 2005 a try to see how that is.

This all has to do with Intel's new WoodCrest CPU... and its virtualization capability... VMWARE is also trying to promote their IN-MOTION product which is ENCREDIBLE!!!!!!

Does anyone think the mac version of the product will become freeware too, since OS 10.5 ( leopard) will be coming out soon. Plus the new programs that promises to allow you to run windows right on your mac with the new intel macs.
