You'll see it on the main admin page, on the right hand side click on "Account Plan" and it will tell you how many users you can create. Generally they give you what you requested when you applied to test it.

I don't like the idea of emails residing on a google server Are there guarantees they wouldn't scan it?

http://www.everyone.net could be the better option, depending on what you want to setup.
Hotmail also launched a program that allows for websits to host their email.
The two above the client can add themselves... I believe with gmail, you have to manually set them up. At least that is how my account appears setup.

I use it for my personal email, mike@photos.cx . In recent weeks however, it's gotten pretty slow.

Emails getting from other servers to gmail seems slower. I only use it with pop access.

I would advise against everyone.net, way too much ads or pop-ups from their service.
I still use it since I started using them many, many years ago. If you are just starting, I would advise against it.

GMail for domains limits you to 25 accounts.

lol... they do not have pops anymore... ditched those earlier this year, maybe three or four months ago.
The ads are for the free service and not that bad. I would put them on par with hotmail and yahoo...
Benefits of everyone.net:
1) when someone goes for a "paid" account, you receive $10. If you have two or three people a month go paid, that alone could pay for your hosting, depending on how much your hosting cost.
2) Ad sharing. You actually share 50% of the ad space. For example, if you want to serve ads for an affiliate program, geared directly toward your group, you can do that. To make things interesting, you can change the ads anytime you like... keep if fresh, keep them clicking. (Of course, the paid accounts will not see any banners.)
3) With everyone.net your paid users can use IMAP.... huge selling point....
No way to get paid with yahoo, hotmail, or gmail... actually, they keep all the revenue and you do all the work. Guess we should feel honored to use their systems.

I use it for a domain, but there are a lot of ads. They let the domain owner use some of the adspace though, and there's a small chance paid space upgrades could benefit the domain owner.
I am looking at MS's domain email (hotmail based) for the next project. Their site says they have an option to let people sign themselves up. I have not used hotmail in a long time. How are the advertisements on hotmail? irritating? less bothersome that everyone.net's? equivalent to yahoo email?
{edit} think how easy it would be for gmail to let the domain owner share some adsense space (if they participated in adsense).
