Question

So many claims, who lives up to them?

Hi, sorry if this is against the rules, I don’t quite get what you mean by "requests aren’t allowed" I don’t think this is a request for someone to host me, rather, a request for information. So, sorry ahead of time if I broke a rule.

I'm in need of advice. I've been google'ing until my eyes bleed, and all the google'ing in the world doesn't beat talking to real people.

I need to know what providers are honest, and reliable, and which ones are down right horrible. I've heard good things about start logic. But then again, startlogicsucks.com has all bad things to say... So which is it? Anyone use start logic? Can I have some REAL testimonials please?

Also, anyone use VizaWeb? How are they?

If you have any other recommendations feel free to toss them out there.

I know there's tons of threads on this, but the search doesn't turn anything concrete up.. only a bunch of mixed responses.

Thank you,
Chris

And there's the rub.

There is no one host that is all things to all clients. You're going to get mixed reviews on any host that's been in the business a while. It can be a daunting task trying to sort the good from the bad. About all you can do is pick one that has the features you need and research them and see if 'most' of their clients are happy.

yeah.. Unfortunately I know that you can't please everyone. But I'm a little hesitant going with someone like start logic, where they offer a Godly amount of bandwidth for an incredibly low price. Something about that just SCREAMS throttling/overselling.

Like i said, you can Google all you want, but you'll end up with a bunch of negative reviews that you don't know if they're real, or just a pissed off customer. And the good reviews, you don’t know who wrote the review. So I figured "hey, why not ask people who know what they're talking about, h*ll, it's the name of their forum!"

Forgive me, I’m 16, I’m supposed to be skeptical of the world.

I would suggest compiling a short list and send some pre-sales emails to some web hosts. You can then maybe narrow down choices further by comparing features to pricing, if they responded timely to your questions, etc.
SWR, as always gives great advice but its really easy to become overwhelmed while looking.
Do you have any relatives or close friends that use a particular web host?

I have compiled my lists. And have emailed a number of companies. They all respond very timely... but then again, they could stop doing that. I have a friend who uses... Forgive me, I forget the company, I think it's something along the lines of web monkey? I know the logo is a monkey... haha. Anyway, they used to be right on top of things. Emailing up to the second updates on downtime. However, for the past 3 weeks now the server has been hijacked by a spammer, who runs a script that emails half the world, causing the server load to go well above 100%, crashing it. For the past 3 weeks the uptime has been near 0%. A perfect server at one point in time, now crippled. The host? doesn't update anymore, doesn't respond to tickets.

Like I said, I’m very much paranoid... I just find it hard to trust what i see, with all the hidden fees, throttling, and overselling.. It’s just very overwhelming, you're right.

I know what I’m looking for. Cheap, reliably, hosting. I don’t want to pay $30 a month for no mysql support *cough*register.com */cough*you know what i mean? Start logic and those all seem.. .too good to be true with big names like go daddy and register all charge so much. It makes me a bit weary, ya know?
