Active Directory Problem

ok so i have win2k3 standard edition installed as the OS on this particular machine. active directory is properly installed etc. i successfully added my laptop (windows xp PRO). to the domain. but there was a shitload of spyware on my laptop so i formatted it very soon after. now i've formatted it and reinstalled xp pro it won't add to my domain. when i go to system properties on the laptop and go to computer name and click the change button. when i enter the netbios name of my domain it connects because it asks me for a username and password. in which i use the administrator/***** password.

it then pauses for a while and says:

The following error occure attempting to join the domain "matrix":

The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

also whilst attempting to add the laptop to the domain i see it add to the computers list in the active directory users and computers. but when the error comes up on the laptop the computer listed in the active directory is disabled.

i've tried the following:

reinstalling active directory - no luck
all my TCP/IP/DNS info are good.
enabling the computer which is automatically added - no luck

anyone?

TIA

Did you give your notebook the same name when you reinstalled XP on it? If so, you need to delete that computer from active directory since it now has a different SID

i'm now in the process of changing to name of the notebook to try again. when i chanegd it and didnt restart i got a different error about multiple connections. meaning. reboot.

It still sounds like you have a secure channel problem. You can use the Netdom.exe command line utility to reset that computer account in active directory. You can also edit the registry to turn off the secure channel requirement just to see if the laptop can then join the domain.

When you say your DNS settings are good, are you pointing to the AD controller for DNS resolution on the laptop? And have you tried joining the machine to the domain using the fully qualified domain name instead (i.e. domain.local or domain.com)??

it's ok now, i thougth that when you turned off windows firewall by the option it wouldn't recognise it. i didn't know you had to stop the service. so i stopped the WF / ICS service and disabled it and all is good now. i'm using a proxy firewall now instead. which i much prefer. (authentication)
