Curious how you're going to reinstall XP with a lost CD?

Probly download an iso from the internet. Nothing wrong with that though if he has a legal key.

Problem being that if he lost the CD, he doesn't have a legal key. Just stirring up trouble, no need to pay any attention to me

If the machine was licensed properly when built you'll have a COA stuck on the case with the product key on it.

I might be wrong here, but when you activate 1 product key, you can't activate it again. So if you're reformating your current installation, you might not be able to install again with the same key...?
P.S. Everest will tell you this

Activation should only give you trouble if you are installing the same CD key onto a totally different computer (or the same one with different parts). If you are just formatting and reinstalling, you shouldn't have a problem.

You can re-install using the same key. If they suspect fraud, they make you call and give you an alternate key to use.

Just phone them, tell them you cannot read the key on the side of the pc, let an older person do the talking: you'll have a new key in seconds (benelux centre)

Not to sure about this but can't you just notify your PC manufacturer if the Window XP OS came with it? I am sure they have the records with them they might even provide you with a replacement disc.

Thats with an oem machine, a retail boxed version of xp home/pro has the little sticker your on about in the box. That means when you get a new pc you can take it with you.
