HELP with file sharing on XP machines
Hey all, I am getting this information when trying to connect to another PC on my home network, my brother gets the same message when trying to connect to mine
"You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found"
We are both on WORKGROUP, have file sharing enabled (although didnt do that last step of running the network wizard on additional PCs), DHCP is enabled, firewall/virus protection is off
any help??
Thanks

Do they both have the client for Microsoft networks enabled?
If you are using TCP/IP as the protocol enable netbios over TCP/IP.
How are you trying to connect, are you trying to map a drive?

Did you physically share the specific resource by right clicking on the folder(s) and enabling sharing?

The usernames/passwords on the machines must be identical when not in a domain situation (especially when using home).
Make sure you have the same user accounts and passwords on both machines, the accounts also may not have blank passwords. Firewalls need to be turned off, and it's usually better to map machines as \\ipaddress rather than their hostname when you don't have a DNS/WINS server running.

Sure about this? I have 4 XP systems here and no two have the same user/passwords. I enabled sharing, and then shared the specific directory(ies), and it works perfectly.
Don't know for sure about the "home" version of XP, though...never saw the need to buy that one.

On both machines, open My Computer. Click Tools, then Folder Options. Click View, and make sure Simple File Sharing (at the bottom) is checked. It dumbs down the security such that you shouldn't get any errors regarding a username or pasword. "Network path not found" is one of those vague MS messages that could mean a connectivity issue as others as described or an authentication issue.
