help me fix windows without having to format.

In recent weeks, I've had problems with applications randomly using up 99% of my cpu. Memory is fine, not cpu. Any time I kill an application, the next one i focus on will start using up 99% of the cpu. Then if I kill that one, explorer.exe will start using up 99% of the cpu, and then i'll usually have to wait 5 minutes before explorer.exe can be started again. If i start it back up immediately, it will use up 99% of the cpu again.

How can i fix this?

Don't tell me to format. I'm not going to format.

Sounds like a crazy virus man, as it doesn't sound like a registry thing. Run a full system scan.. if it comes up with nothing, you should probably .... format.

Hi Mike,

Maybe your system is dirty. Try clean up the server with antispyware and an updated anti virus programs

If you have done that already, the problems could be due to
- improper removal of program
- hardware issue eg. hard disk, ram

That's all i can think of..

umm... find out what other applications are running in the background... delete some stuff you don't need from startup (msconfig)... update (of course you have, but had to say it)... use firefox and see if you have the same issue... look at your firewall log to see if something is blocked, thus going out of control.... Bunch of stuff you can check.

Based on your past posts, I would not think you have spyware on your pc. I had the same issues a couple of days with a computer I was working with, the guy had some crazy app loaded... He did not have anti-spyware programs loaded. I was able to delete without having to format by downloading exployer 7 and removing the files in question. I recommened format, but he was against it... did the best I could in that situation....

I am now recommending everyone who wants to download porn, music, bit torrents, etc, to purhcase virtual pc 04... kill virtual pc and save your pc....

Unfortunately, you have a virus... it's called windows. I've reformatted every windows machine I have roughly once a year, it's one of the many drawbacks of relying on windows to be stable or secure.

Read hekwu's signature Amdac. Linux is not the answer. GO WINDOWS!

Actually, I agree with Amdac; that is solid advice. I format at least once a year, if not more, when working with a lot of updates to my programs. Windows is not 100% stable when you are downloading junk or testing programs a lot, etc....

If windows were perfect, I would not need my mac... I'm starting to fall in love again, with my mac....

i have to use applications that only run on windows and a suitable open source replacement hasn't been created yet.

Not going to use wine either.

How do you know the memory is fine, Mike? Have you tested it?

Have you run a HijackThis scan to make sure there's nothing running that shouldn't be?

Have you downloaded anything recently that might have had baggage...or any possibly incomplete AVI files...?

Comments like these make Microsoft look pretty bad if he likes the Mac over Windows. I mean, I see his point, but isn't Windows supposed to be better?

I have to format probably every 6 months. And what really annoys me is when I get everything setup just perfect, to find my USB driver has been incorrectly installed and requires a reinstall to be fixed.

- Microsoft Windows NT = Nice Try
- Microsoft Windows ME = More Errors
- Microsoft Windows XP = Xtra Problems

There's a quick outline on the new naming system Microsft seem to be following.

Drac

Blah blah blah.

I'm running a 4 year old XP installation just fine. Regular updates, good antivirus and anti spyware software, defragging occasionally and not visiting any crap sites has kept my PC running extremely well.

I don't need to format at all. This PC and it's Windows installation is OLD, but still runs near enough good as new

Yeah but I'm sure you don't test alot of new software of your PC is why the registry would run so clean.

Installing and uninstalling piles up junk in the registry and just makes more unwanted files!

Oh, and by not including a reply for the naming system for Microsoft, does that mean you're agreeing with me??

Regards,
Drac
