Hello all Now i know this is not a computer forum and stuff but i know some of you here are experienced with this type of stuff and was hoping maybe someone can help me, Well i am running on optonline.net as my ISP and have a cable modem hooked to a wireless-g linksys router well i'm trying to change at least the last 3 digits of my IP Address because of fear of hackers i have tried IPRELEASE & IPFLUSH method and i have also tried resetting my router but for some odd reason my IP continues to stay the same so my question is are their any other methods or does this even work for a person using windows XP, cabel internet and a linksys router ???

Are you talking about the last three numbers of your ISP-assigned DNS IP, or the last three numbers of your gateway address (192.168.0.xxx)? Only your ISP can reassign your IP address, and changing the latter will do nothing to protect you (it's not too hard to scan 255 numbers to figure out where you moved).

What about securing your network, instead of engaging in security through obfuscation, which is a very dangerous methodology!

hehe yeah sorry didn't see this section although i did remember posting in the wrong section afterwards and hoped it would be moved sorry

As for the IP Address yeah i just contacted my ISP and they told me they cannot change it because something with the servers i would have to disconnect for 24-48 hours I wasn't talking about the router address though i meant my real IP Address and yeah i will definitly think about buying a visirus protector or something.

See if this works..
1. unplug the ethernet cable from the back of your linksys router (the one that plugs into the wan port)

2. plug that into the back of your computer.

3. restart your computer

4. check you ip "start->run type "cmd" click ok" in the dos box type ipconfig check out your ip..

5. shutdown your pc plug everything back like it was

6. restart your router

7. check the ip in the web interface.

I know that works for my cable connection.

Nope sorry freebsdmike that mthod didn't work for me, tried it 2 times with no results they really want me to stay with this IP i think lol Oh well i guess i can just deal with it seeing as the only other method would be turning off my computer and router for 24-48 straight hours which cannot be done in my house, Thanks alot anyway guys

The_pm has the right idea, but if you really want to change it

1) Open your web browser
2) Go to http://192.168.1.1
3) Username: admin. Password: admin
4) Go to the MAC Address Clone tab (I hope you have it, my Linksys has some custom software installed to it )
5) Put in something different than what is shown. Just change a single number or letter (for example change AC to AD in a single column), and your ISP should issue you a new address.

Again, this really won't protect you, but that is one way to go about it. Have fun!

If you are really worried about hackers put yourself behind a NAT and run your "sensitive" data in a TrueCrypt volume

I doubt most hackers are interested in a home user's PC

Yup tried that method as well but when i change any of the letter and save settings my internet connection gets lost

Most ISP's will issue you a new IP if the modem is left unplugged for a day. Not really ideal though.
