Front Page on MSN Search Results

Hey, I created a really simple site recently that I had no intentions of adding more to other than the content already on it. The only advertising is done through a free adwords campaign.

The thing is that the site was getting decent traffic from msn and so I searched some keywords and the site is showing up on the front page for a lot of the keywords, but the search brings up over 100k results. I guess I'm just curious as to how the hell this happend? I've spent years on some sites never to get front page results and here's a site i dont' even care about that's on the front page like 3 weeks after opening.

(Btw I'm not complaining, just intrigued)

Depends on what the keywords are. Since you don't really care about the site, I'd guess that they aren't keywords that are going to make anyone a lot of money. In general, that means they aren't very competitive -- the people who are best at getting good rankings are doing it where there's money to be made.

100,000 results, for that matter, isn't very many ("web hosting" for example brings up 104 million results at MSN -- and 811 million at Google, "home mortgage" brings up over 16 million, and "online casino" 35 million). That's another indication that it's probably not a very profitable query.

Ahh, yeah this was just an adsense experiment. Making it in the real sucessful keywords was a task I wasn't ready to take on so I thought I'd try a not as popular keyword, but it seems to be doing decent.

Hrmm it appears for google there's 54.7 million results though. I guess that's just the difference between msn and google?
