Use PC as router?

Basically I wish to switch my main PC to Linux, however my PC's wireless card is not supported under *nix.

I have a laptop I don't use anymore, which I'd like to setup as a router, how would I achieve this? Basically what I want to do is this:

Laptop has a wireless card, receives and sends signals to router. Plug my main PC into the laptops ethernet card.

Router > laptop wireless card > laptop ethernet port > PC ethernet port.

How can I achieve this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Laptop does and will run XP.

A wireless card not supported by Linux is something very rare these days. Which one do you have ?

I can't recall the chip make, however when I last checked the driver was in alpha and very buggy. So not totally unsupported.

Anyway, I'd prefer this setup regardless as my PC's network card is utterly rubbish whilst my laptops picks up a great strong signal.

Anyone know how to use my laptop as a router then?

If you are going to stick to WinXP on your notebook, you might want to take a look at stuff like WinRoute.

In Windows, open the network settings on the laptop, select both the wired and wireless cards and then right-click and bridge them together.

The Linux PC should then be connected to the router as if it was connected wirelessly (e.g. it should get an IP address from the wireless router, etc).

Sometimes bridging is unreliable, so you can always use XP's internet connection sharing instead. The downside is that your Linux PC will be on a seperate IP (e.g. Wireless 192.168.2.xx, wired from laptop would be 192.168.1.xx). If you are going to do this, right-click the wireless connection on the laptop and enable sharing.

on OpenBSD3.9 I installed the OS, googled for a decent PF configuration file, and voila, 30 minutes later I had a NAT firewall. It's really that easy. PF is just BSD's version of iptables (sorta.) And OpenBSD is secure out of the box, so it's a great platform to work with for a firewall.

When using Linux in my work I use the zebra package... but you probably don't need to go that far (rip, ospf, bgp, etc.)
